Green amethyst FAQ

Short answers first. Follow the links when you want the full explanation.

Identity & names

What is green amethyst?

It is the familiar retail name for prasiolite, a transparent green variety of quartz. See the full explanation.

Is green amethyst the same mineral as purple amethyst?

Both are quartz. The colour is different, and the precise name for the green variety is prasiolite.

Why is it called prasiolite?

Prasiolite is the gemological name used for green quartz. “Green amethyst” remains common shopping language, but prasiolite is the more precise term.

Is it a birthstone?

It is not one of the standard modern birthstones. Some sellers connect it with amethyst because both are quartz, but that is not an official birthstone designation.

Natural, treated & real

Is green amethyst natural?

Naturally green prasiolite exists, but most commercial material gets its green colour through controlled heating or irradiation. Natural vs. treated explained.

Does treatment make it fake?

No. A treated stone can still be genuine quartz. The important issue is accurate disclosure of what treatment produced or changed the colour.

How can I tell if the colour is untreated?

You usually cannot prove treatment history from appearance alone. If a seller charges a premium for untreated natural colour, ask what evidence supports that claim.

Is green amethyst rare?

Naturally coloured material is uncommon. Ordinary treated commercial prasiolite is much more available, so “rare” by itself is not a useful buying claim.

Buying & value

What makes one stone better than another?

Look at colour, brightness, cut, clarity, face-up size, treatment disclosure and how well the finished jewelry is made. See the quality guide.

Is darker green always better?

No. Green amethyst is often naturally pale in appearance. A pleasing, lively colour in normal light matters more than simply choosing the darkest photograph.

How much should green amethyst cost?

There is no single useful price-per-carat number for every piece. Stone quality, size, metal, workmanship, seller service and brand can all affect the final price. See the price guide.

What should I ask a seller?

Ask what the stone is, whether its colour was treated, its dimensions and weight, what claims are written on the invoice, and what the return terms are. The seller claim decoder helps with listing language.

Wear & care

Can I wear green amethyst every day?

Quartz is about 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it has reasonable scratch resistance, but it can still chip or be damaged by impact. Rings need more care than pendants or earrings.

How should I clean it?

Warm water, mild soap, a soft brush and a soft cloth are a conservative routine. Avoid harsh chemicals and unnecessary heat. See the care guide.

Does the colour fade?

Colour stability can depend on the material and treatment history. Conservative storage away from prolonged intense heat and strong light is sensible.

Meaning

What does green amethyst symbolize?

Modern crystal and jewelry traditions commonly associate it with renewal, calm, compassion and clarity. Those are symbolic meanings, not proven medical effects. Read about meaning and symbolism.
